HAD TO START SOMEWHERE..
The car that started it all. My 2014 Scion TC. This car was my first step into detailing and where my passion for cars started. I was 20 years old when this photo was taken.
Like all detailers, we have to start somewhere. Typically it starts with a cheap wash bucket, a microfiber chamois wash mitt, and Meguiar’s Gold Class car soap (you know that iconic bottle). The process was simple…wash the entire car, with the same mitt, and rinse with a garden hose and then drive it to remove the water from the crevices. At the time I thought it was great and that I had done something special.
My neighbors noticed how often and meticulous (at that stage of “detailing”) I was doing that I started washing their cars. I’d also wash my parents cars to help relieve that fact that I was using a copious amounts of water that I was not paying for. I’d spend time washing my car, their cars and learning different wash practices from YouTube. At the same time I was researching products and chemicals. Now that I look back at this picture, I remember that the paint was so swirled, dull and only had a spray wax applied to the paint. As I continued my endeavors I’d see photos online of crazy shiny and glossy cars. Looking at mine, I never realized that mine needed a machine polish. I would spend lots of money on products while never getting that “show car” look. I started using spray waxes regularly on my girlfriends 2003 VW Jetta and it made a difference but I wanted to learn more.
I’d been detailing for a little while and I was doing the basics. Quick vacuums, wipe down with a heavy degreaser (not safe for plastics) and then doing my wash and spray wax. I made some business cards and called it “Manny’s Auto Detailing. A friend of mine contacted me out of the blue and asked if I ever did any vehicle polishing. He had a black car that he wanted detailed. I told him “I’ve never done it, but I’ve been wanting to get into it.” He then made a proposal, “If you come use this polisher I have, and detail my car I’ll give you the polisher in return.”
This was the first polisher I ever used. It was a Porter Cable. I polished his black car, in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, with only one polishing pad. Those variables don’t pair well together, but back then, it was a start. From there I began to invest in better products, other companies and new procedures. I would find YouTube videos about polishing techniques and then try them on my own vehicles and if they did work, I would translate that process to my clients vehicles. I soon began to realize that to get the best looking vehicle, you would need to polish the paint. This is because polishing or “Paint Correction” removes those swirls marks and defects. It evens the clear coat and creates a flat surface, bringing the best gloss and shine.
From this point, I really fell in love with Paint Correction. The deep dive into what is a “show car” finish. A lot of detailers look for the “how can I remove these defects” which is great, but I chose the opposite of the spectrum. I wanted to know - “How do I put these defects in the paint”. Basically if I knew how to induce swirls, scratches, marring etc. then it would help me recognize them right away, and quickly get a foundation of how to remove them. Defects in general are the same, but what differs for each vehicle is the type of clear-coat the defects are in. Some paints are very hard, some are very soft. Variables can change, but how defects are put into paint is typically only pathway depending on the type of defect it is.
As I started doing more in-depth Paint Correction services, I realized that if I’m going to correct paint to a high level, then I need to offer better and stronger protection. Ceramic Coatings were becoming more relevant in the industry. Better protection, longer lasting. I started installing them for my client Ed. He gave me a lot of opportunities to install them since he’d buy new cars regularly. I was able to hone my skills with installing. In conjunction with applying coatings, that also meant I needed to continue to push the boundaries of paint correction. High level, extensive paint correction. I wanted the best for my clients, and that is very relevant to this day. I really started creating a name for the business I was doing, and the level of client expectations were growing a lot.As time moved on and higher end vehicles were getting corrections and coatings, I wanted to be an exclusive installer for a company. I have specific values I present during services and I needed a company that stood by them same values. A company that wasn’t saturated with installers, extremely exclusive, and actually had great products. I needed a very close relationship where I could contact the chemist when I needed, provide real world feedback, and point clients in the right direction for products. Let’s be honest, there is too much on the market, and if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you will absolutely waste money. I didn’t want that for my clients. After a while of searching….I found the BEST company.
Since Oregon only had one installer, I knew that they were going to be very picky on who would represent them. I was confident in my skills and business ethics, I personally thought it would be a perfect fit. After a while of waiting, I received the email saying that they had accepted Prestige Detailing for a certified installer. This certification solidified what Prestige Detailing represents. It was time for exclusive training and support from their team. As the years have gone by I’ve had the pleasure of installing these ceramic coatings. With that, I’ve been able to be a voice for my clients in the industry and provide necessary product feedback directly to Dr. Beasley’s. I’m extremely picky when it comes to quality products, because I want the best. I want a great user experience, longevity, and high quality product.
I noticed with some detailing businesses I was hearing about they lacked communication. Basically they would install a Ceramic Coating on a vehicle, and then that was it. The client was left not knowing how to wash the vehicle, what products to use, what maintenance services entailed, and there was so many unanswered questions. Dr. Beasley’s is helping fix that in ways, but as the detailer/installer, it’s also my job to communicate with you abut your coatings, products and any questions you may have.
Every aspect of this business is high-end. I’m not here to just collect a paycheck, I’m here to provide specialized services, help clients fix problems, provide necessary feedback, and fix the problems in the industry. Prestige Detailing isn’t just a detailing company, it’s about client relations and ensuring every client is very well taken care of.
