WHAT IS MATTE PAINT AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT THAN GLOSSY PAINT?
Matte paint is creates a non-reflective and flat finish to a vehicle paint. Unlike “glossy” paint, matte disperses light differently through its structure. The valleys in matte paint trap light and because of this, the light cannot reflect and create that high-shine or “glossy” finish.
Glossy paint is well, shiny and glossy looking. When we want the most “shine” in regular car paint, we want to create an even and flat surface. This allows light to reflect off the vehicle. The more even the paint is, the more depth and shine a vehicle will have. By polishing regular paint, we create an even surface for the high shine or “glossy” look.
- You know those “car wash swirls” you see in paint? Well, when you “Paint Correct” a vehicle, you are removing those defects by “leveling” the paint surface, thus creating a more “glossy” and high-shine finish.
HOW DO I KEEP MATTE, WELL MATTE? CAN I USE THE SAME PRODUCTS I USE FOR A REGULAR CAR?
This article will go over the process of Matte paint detailing and protection. It’s imperative that a “Matte” vehicle, when detailed, protected and maintained correctly you utilize Matte specific detailing products. Otherwise you can alter the appearance, and once any shine is added to Matte paint, you can’t go back.
Okay, getting a little stressed about owning a Matte car now? Don’t worry, Matte paint isn’t as scary as some think or make it out to be. Again, the two most important things for Matte paint is:

THE PREP/WASH PROCESS
My client drove three and-a-half hours to protect his beautiful BMW m4 Competition in Matte Portimao Blue. It got cleaned, prepped, and then professionally Ceramic Coated with a Matte Ceramic Coating. This was a very fun detailing service I did.
Like any Ceramic Coating service, it’s crucial to wash and prep your vehicle correctly. Especially with Matte, we don’t want to scratch it with fine dust or debris, because we can’t polish it. But, we also want to remember our washing rules; wheels first, then the body!
Started with a foam pre-soak on these wheels and then cleaned and rinses them accordingly (just like any wash service I provide).
Once completed, it was time to begin prepping the rest of the vehicle. Starting with a Matt Body Wash snow foam treatment. This provides crucial dwelling to help breakdown surface contamination, and encapsulate any dust, so then it can be rinsed off. A Matte paint cleanser product was then used. This cleanser is the “Chemical Decontamination” for Matte surfaces. It breakdown iron particles and fallout. Essentially it’s that extra deep clean step that is needed.
A second Matte Body Wash snow foam treatment was done and then I went in with a wash pad and washed the vehicle accordingly. Remember, lubrication is what we want to provide the safest wash process for Matte paint. This reduces the potential for scouring/scratching a vehicle surface, no matter the paint finish. Also during this second foam, its a great time to clean badges, grilles and emblems with specific brushes.
Once the entire vehicle is hand washed, a thorough rinse was completed. Then I used my car air dryer to dry the vehicle and pull it inside.
CERAMIC COATING APPLICATION
Unfortunately I did not take pictures during the Coating application. The Matte Ceramic Coating is 100% solids and is very thick.
It is a different application process. It’s a wet application using distilled water.
The end result protects the finish and does not alter there Matte paint or appearance.
